Jonano Organic Clothing
04 | 20 | 2012 by Jenica Rodriguez

Jonano

As the green fashion movement gains steam, there are increasing options for those seeking sustainably grown and sourced materials in styles that are on trend and cute. It is not enough to just use organic cotton if the style is not appealing. Jonano is one of those options and is perfect for someone whose style is modern, clean and simple.

Committed to making organic clothing accessible to everyday people, Jonano offers an entire wardrobe for the eco conscious woman. Lingerie, dresses, yoga pants, knit tops and bottoms, even baby clothes made in organic cotton, bamboo and silk are all offered at reasonable prices compared to some other eco friendly clothing lines. Besides being made of the best materials on earth, Jonano also uses PVC and phalate free waterbased ink for all of their graphic designs. This means that each garment is made pure with nothing in it to potentially irritate one’s skin or the earth’s soil.

The beauty of Jonano is their simplicity. The styles are not fussy or overly detailed but rather stream lined. They understand the importance of using quality materials like cashmere soft bamboo and peace silk and the luster of these materials are not eclipsed by tons of construction details. Soft shades and prints based on Mother Nature complement their styles. The quest for well-made, green fashion has been fulfilled.

Oraganic Fruit of the Loom- Ayten Gasson Lingerie
04 | 06 | 2012 by Jenica Rodriguez

Ayten Gason

Today’s fashionistas do not just want stylish clothing. They want clothing that comes from sustainable sources, is organic, made locally using eco friendly practices and is stylish. The world of eco fashion has grown globally and there are more options now than ever.

British lingerie label, Ayten Gasson, is offering eco conscious trend setters a line of lovely, retro inspired lingerie made of organic and cruelty free, or peace, silk. Cruelty free fabric is another criteria many green fashion queens are seeking. Conventional silk making methods boil the whole cocoon with the silk worm still inside. Peace silk is made after the silk worm emerges from the cocoon and lives out the rest of their life. In addition to using organic and peace silk, Ayten Gasson also uses vintage lace and buttons sourced from British mills and the designer’s own family heirlooms.

Often hand finishing each garment in the design studio, each piece is proudly made in Britain. Supporting local factories is an increasing concern for consumers who want to help keep manufacturing jobs in their respective countries and it’s important for Ayten Gasson to bring back the traditional lingerie making skills England was once known for. Clearly, Ayten Gasson understands their customers concerns and desires and is able to offer a pretty, feminine collection that embraces eco friendly practices. All in all, Ayten Gasson, is a company to not only patronize but also to watch as they continue to leave their green foot print in the world of fashion.

She ended the show with a fitted gold gown that brought the crowd to their feet in a standing ovation.

Ina Soltani
Ina Soltani

Known for styling and dressing celebrities, Ina Soltani returned to Style Fashion Week LA for the second time and showed a beautiful collection of dresses and 2-piece looks. Her color palate was very simple but eye catching with blacks, whites, and bright solid colors such as purple, hot pink, green, and blue. She also show a few black and white mini dresses that are sure to be a hit this fall.

XCVI
XCVI

XCVI put on an exciting production, starting their show with electro pop DJ/Violinist Jennifer Spingola who put on an amazing performance playing her violin to Top-40 songs. The XCVI Fall/Winter 2012 ready-to-wear collection included a palate of neutral colors with pops of blue, red and plum. All the clothing in the collection looked easy and comfortable to wear. Some of the pieces had accents of glitter and/or were pair with great accessories. Each girl that walked down the runway was ready for fall!

Madison Park
Madison Park Collective

Madison Park Collective presented a men’s wear collection. An all male dance group was incorporated into the runway show, making it an exciting and entertaining to watch. Male models strut their way down the cat walk wearing T-shirts and pants. Some of the looks were paired with great fall sweaters or leather jackets. The clothes were cool, casual and could fit almost any man’s style.

Skin Graft
Skin Graft

Skin Graft showed the audience how great they are at working with leather and designing clothes for men and women that fit the body precisely. Soft grays, mint greens, black, and browns comprised the colors used in the collection. The inspiration for the collection seems to have a wide rage. We saw aviator looks, ensembles with an edgy street vibe, and gorgeous gowns that turned heads. All and all it was a well put together collection.

Mila
Mila Hermanovski

Fresh off of Project Runway All Stars, contestant Mila Hermanovski showed a collection at Style Fashion Week LA. Her Fall/Winter 2012 show was a production of chic and sophisticated clothing with a mod twist. It included creative tights paired with well made tunics, dresses, pants and blazers. She stayed true to herself using a basic colors such as, black, grey, nude with pops of neon yellow.

Octavio Carlin
Octavio Carlin

Octavio Carlin presented a collection representing what he does best- easy to wear yet well made dresses. Referencing old Hollywood glamour, the collection was clearly designed for the modern woman. Art deco accents, ultra low cut backs and swinging, shiny fabrics in various retro silhouettes that would suit many body types made for a fun, clean collection. A classy color palete of deep black, bright white and metallic gold was complemented by shades of ultra violet and lipstick red and a wild leopard print. .

Amato Couture
Furne One

Following on the sophisticated heels of Octavio Carlin and sure to be an inspiration for Lady Gaga at some point, Dubai based haute couture label Amato by Furne One left a crystal covered, kitchen utensil mark on the runway. From the opening model creeping along the runway with a wicked head sculpture composed of metal and syringes and highly structured undergarments, the audience was electrified as she contorted her body to the music declaring,” It’s alive!” Each model that sauntered down the runway held a captive audience as Swarovski encrusted gowns and body suits in dreamy shades like mint green, pale blue, peach and faint pink contrasted highly with the hard, cold metal head pieces composed of everything from kitchen utensils to lights challenging traditional notions of beauty and femininity.

LA Fashion Weekend at Sunset Gower Studios
03 | 19 | 2012 by Jenica Rodriguez

Betsey Johnson

What designer do women turn to when they want to look fun, sexy, fierce, and feminine and drop dead gorgeous? Betsey Johnson! A Betsey Johnson capsule collection was presented at Sunset Gower Studios Fashion Weekend and highlighted some of the best pieces from her spring 2012 collection. Models sashayed like the rock stars they looked like they were on the runway in a myriad of patterns- stripes, florals, skulls, snow leopard and Betsey’s signature rose bud print. Betsey’s favored silhouette of a fitted top and poufy skirt reigned the runway but there were also long dresses, short and fitted dresses, a playful short set and leather jackets that reinvented the cool factor.

Hailing from Paris, Vilorija debuted her first collection. Based on the song “I’ll Be Your Mirror” by the Velvet Undergound, Vilorija sent models down the runway in playful dresses and short sets in both futuristic and vintage inspired styles. Mirror type trims and metallic fabrics juxtaposed nicely against velvet and lace trims providing the perfect duality a modern young women needs in her closet.

White Drama - A Collection By Comme Des Garcons
12 | 11 | 2011 by Jenica Rodriguez

Jen Awad

When one thinks of avant-garde, the design house that comes to mind is Comme Des Garcons. Founded in Tokyo by Rei Kawakubo in 1969, Comme Des Garcons has excited the fashion industry over the past four decades with their distressed fabrics shaped into unconventional silhouettes such as a half jacket. Joined by Junya Watanabe and Tao Kurihara, Comme Des Garcons offers unique clothing and fragrances for those that view fashion as an art form.

The theme for Comme Des Garcons spring 2012 collection was “white drama.” All white, semi-theatrical looks were sent down the runway with a story to tell. Thought provoking, this collection flowed together so well that it seems as though you are watching a transformation take place between garments as well as, life stages women endure (wedding, birth and even death). This collection also represented an anti thesis to the trend of fast fashion with the use of extravagant fabrics and yardage, couture sewing details and excellent tailoring. The all white palette helped to showcase all the details and convey a dramatic message. Overall, a very inspiring and surprising collection!

Concept Fashion Week LA- Jen Awad
10 | 29 | 2011 by Jenica Rodriguez

Jen Awad

Concept Fashion Week LA is a forum for emerging fashion designers to showcase their work in an art infused environment at the Ace Gallery in Los Angeles. Amidst the avant garde fashion exhibits and colorful fashion shows featuring everything from glamorous evening gowns to spunky sportswear, Jen Awad’s collection caught my eye. Referencing 1980’s underground punk culture with strategically placed black X’s; Awads’ collection was fun, flirty and, most important, totally wearable (with the addition of a cami or a bra for the more modest)!

Grounded with a classic color combo of black and white, Awad was very smart in adding fun and unexpected colors such as hot pink, neon yellow and brilliant blues. Highlights from the show were: see through rain coats in shades of day glo pink and dark blue (which made me wish it rained more in California!), sheer secretary blouses in neon colors (that would distract your boss), 1980’s inspired cotton dresses with creative heart shaped cut outs and open weaving details and a black and white swirl design skirt suit that is hypnotic. This collection is perfect for someone who is edgy and likes to have fun with their fashion and look good doing it.

Style Fashion Week LA
10 | 24 | 2011 by Clarissa Cota and Jenica Rodriguez

In its second season in Los Angeles at the Vibiana Cathedral, Style Fashion Week (SFW) proved that it’s sticking around for awhile and only getting better. There was a list of returning as well as new designers that sent their current collections down the catwalk.

Nicolita
Nicolita

Starting off SFW with samba and dancers, Nicolita set the mood for a tropical location before sending their Spring 2012 Swimsuit Collection down the runway. Sassy bright colors, cute ruffles in the right places, and swim suits for all body types are what we saw from this duo designing team. They also make great trendy swim shorts for men. Nicolita definitely did an amazing job at showing the audience what is going to be hot in swimwear for next year.

Kareena's Trends
Kareena’s Trends

When Kareena’s Trend’s garments hit the runway we saw a range of beautiful tunics adorned with beading, crystals, or one-of- a-kind embroidery. All of their pieces were uniquely dyed and cut into shapes that can be universally worn. A Kareena’s piece can be worn over a swim suit, used as fancy lounge wear, or even fashioned as a top or dress.

La La Land
La La Land

La La Land showed a cute collection for women that included casual pieces with unique animal prints. Their ready to wear pieces could make any young girl say “I would like that in my closet.” Any piece in the collection could be paired up with jeans, shorts or a cute tank for a casual but playful LA look.

Stop Staring
Stop Staring

Known for their body hugging dresses that make every woman look like a pin up model, Stop Staring returned to LA’s SFW with their Spring/Summer 2012 line. Models swayed their hips down the runway in Stop Starings’ signature dresses and skirts, and classy sportswear pieces, such as, playsuits and high waisted shorts. Black and white dominated the color palette with doses of soft pinks, shimmery silvers and bold reds. Nostalgic fabric prints such as polka dots, fauna and floral, and cherries mixed in nicely with more edgy abstract prints and metallic fabric.

Alternative Apparel
Alternative Apparel

Alternative Apparel showed their Spring 2012 Oasis of Color collection. Inspired by the casual lifestyle of California surf and turf, Alternative Apparel offered up relaxed silhouettes for both men and women featuring unstructured coats, long flowing dresses, sheer sweaters, heathered walking shorts and loose tunics in colors of the desert. Their new women’s swimwear line was debuted and was shown in stripes and camo print. This is the perfect collection for warming spring days that will transition nicely into summer’s heat spells.

Gypsy 05
Gypsy 05

Putting on a show full of theatrics and glamour seemed to be a piece of cake for returning designers Gypsy 05. They filled the venue with an array of industry people and celebrities who all seemed to be fans of the brand. Long casual dresses that flowed with ease, wide leg pants paired with tops that fell on the body nicely, and soft blues, greens, and peaches incorporated some of the women’s pieces in this show. For men, relaxed shorts and pants paired with dyed shirts in various colors stomped the runway. Gypsy 05 put on a remarkable show that pleased the crowd visually.

Octavio Carlin
Octavio Carlin

Octavio Carlin
presented a sophisticated and classy collection made of satin’s and basic colors such as black, white and electric blue. We saw pieces that can easily be paired with a blazer during the day for work and can go blazer-less in the evening for an after work cocktail or “night on the town.” He also showed a couple inventive pieces with a sheer butterfly print as a top fabric and a stripped textile as an under lay or lining. Altogether, the collection was cohesive and looked well thought out.

Amato Couture
Amato Couture

Amato Couture was a treat for any pair of eyes. They sent show stopping avant-garde pieces, with an equestrian esthetic, as well as a variety of beautiful wedding gowns down the runway. Each piece they show cased could stand alone in an art exhibit or could be seen on the red carpet, worn by Lady Gaga.
Amato Couture used an assortment of unconventional materials including wood, sticks, shingled plastics and lots of glitter in their garments. It was crystal clear why the word couture is in their name.

10 | 02 | 2011 by Jenica Rodriguez

Gwen Stefani has been tearing up the music world over the past twenty years with No Doubt and her solo albums. She has also been making headlines as a fashion designer with her L.A.M.B. collection over the last eight years. A rarity within the celebrity clothing lines, Stefani designs clothes that look like they, or will, belong in her closet.

Originally from Anaheim, California, Stefani worked her way up from performing at house parties to sold-out stadiums and from scouring thrift stores to create original and funky outfits to having John Galliano personally design her wedding dress in 2002. Stefani designed her first collection in 2003 out of her kitchen and it has been receiving rave reviews ever since becoming bigger and better with each season.

L.A.M.B.’s spring 2012 collection is another glimpse inside Stefani’s dream closet with retro influences combining nicely with juxtapositional menswear/ feminine elements with slouchy jumpsuits, motorcycle jackets, short and flirty skirts and mini dresses. Stand out pieces are a one shoulder, floor length black and white ikat caftan and a black and white geometric print dandy suit.

In addition to just debuting her new L.A.M.B. collection, Stefani also has designed a children’s line called Harajuku Mini that will be sold in Target stores starting November 13. Offering fun screen printed t shirts, tutu skirts, hoodies and accessories for babies, kids and tweens; this collection allows Stefani to incorporate her inspiration from Harajuku and offer her fans another amazing product that she has created.

andF_Green Is The New Black

To some people, the term "eco fashion" evokes images of tie-dye, hippie skirts and organic cotton t- shirts. However, contemporary eco fashion is about sustainably made apparel and accessories that help minimize our impact on our world while being current on trends. Creativity, fun and haute couture sewing techniques have been implemented by innovative designers in the eco movement; which has helped eco fashion have a serious presence within the fashion world. Seamlessly blending high fashion with high socio-environmental consciousness, British designer Ada Zanditon has created a luxury women's line that uses organic and natural fabrics

to create sculptural, unique fashion. Vibrant and rich colors are achieved with AZO- free dyes. Zanditon's design studio is outfitted with eco friendly light bulbs, eco friendly cleaning products and recycled paper meaning that she does not just talk the talk, but that she walks the walk.

Friendly "Furs"
4 | 3 | 2011 by Clarissa Cota

andF_Green Is The New Black

Wearing actual animal fur has been a controversial topic over time and across the world, due to the process it takes of attaining furs. How do we display/wear the classic glamorous vintage look fur provides without killing or harming our Earth's furry friendly creatures? The answer is faux fur my friends. According to www.ehow.com, faux fur was created in 1929, but hit the fashion scene full force in the early 1950's. When first invented, faux fur was indented to be a less expensive alternative to real fur and also became an easier material to manipulate. Typically made of polymeric fibers, this new type of "fur" at the time was easy to dye and came closest to imitating the look of actual fur. Today, those who feel strongly about animal rights are able to wear faux fur as a real fur substitute.

Celebrity stylist and designer Rachael Zoe released her Fall/Winter 2011 Collection this past February and Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. In her collection, she presented 5 faux fur looks that included a long chic fancy vest, a few long sleeve furs that were combined with leather alternatives and complimentary buttons, as well as, a long military inspired coat with faux fur thick piping on the hood and faux fur that borders the bottom of the coat. Most of Zoe’s faux fur looks are sold at under $100. Comparably to real fur, Zoe’s prices are extremely affordable and can also be considered priceless if we can measure the value of saving an animal’s life. The lesson to be taken is you can still be glamorous, trendy, and fashion forward with fur without compromising the life of a living creature.

One For One World

One of the more environmentally and socially conscious fashion trends in recent memory has to be the low-profile cool of TOMS Shoes. You have probably seen them around, a simply constructed sneaker featuring a signature blue and white Tom's flag. What you may not know is that TOMS are the result of one entrepreneur's vision to improve the living conditions of millions of impoverished children in third world nations. These children often go without shoes due to poverty and are susceptible to dangerous foot diseases and infections. TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie has created a "One for One" business model in which the purchased of a pair of shoe's ensures that a child in need will receive a pair of shoe's as well.

Not only are TOMS socially conscious but they are constructed with low-impact environmentally friendly materials.

A breakdown of TOMS shoe construction from a TOMS representative:

The TOMS Classic alpargata style has a low environmental impact simply by nature of the design: A simple, natural textile upper on a one-piece bottom. No petroleum-based, molded pieces, no metal lace eyelets or buckles. All TOMS shoes use a "loose-lining" construction to avoid any glue’s in the uppers. The same goes for the one-piece bottom unit- no glue. The only glue in the TOMS Classic style is between the upper and the bottom unit. We routinely test each component of TOMS shoes for toxins. We stick to AZO-free and lead-free dyes.

Independent auditors inspect our factories several times per year to ensure adherence to TOMS Code of Conduct for environmental and social issues. Additionally, TOMS has representatives in the factories virtually every day.

While TOMS Classic shoes in traditional canvas and rubber are environmentally gentle by nature, TOMS Eco/Vegan shoes take it a step further.

TOMS ECO Shoes feature:

This shoe features a loose lining construction and one-piece bottom unit to keep the use of adhesives to a minimum.

Upper material is 100% certified organic cotton OR a twill material woven from 70%Hemp + 30% PET (post-consumer plastic bottles).

Outsoles made largely from recycled rubber and EVA scraps gathered from local factories.

Canvas insole replaces leather insole to ensure the shoes are vegan.

Not only are TOMS a great way to show your awareness of the social and environmental issues of the day but they are a great fashion statement, from the TOMS classic shoe to my personal favorite the TOMS botas, a high cut boot version of the classic TOMS.

Gypsies and Heretics
3 | 27 | 2011 Jenica Rodriguez

This past week Los Angeles celebrated locally designed and made fashion with a four-day event, Style Fashion Week. Part of the larger Los Angeles Fashion Week event which encompasses a variety of designers of all levels from street wear to haute couture, Style Fashion Week features both established and emerging designers. Gypsy 05 and Future Heretics were two of the featured established designers that presented their new collections at the Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles.

Gypsy 05 offered fun, feminine and flirty 70’s inspired flowing dresses, skirts and loose tops for women and casually tailored sportswear jackets and pants combined with funky basics such as thermal long sleeved shirts for men. Standout pieces include the “couture” gown; a strapless gown with yards of fabric flowing from the bodice and the draped fabric at the front bodice that ties at the back of the bodice in a looped bow offered in both blue and red, little shorts with ruffles at the legs, a light gray men’s blazer with black contrast lapel and buttons and funky unisex scarves with metallic details. The hair design for all the models was very fun and featured twisted knots, flowing and voluminous crimped hair and pinned in flowers for the women and one of the male models. Overall, Gypsy 05 presented a very cool, casual and unassuming vibe.

Future Heretics, as the name may imply, presented an edgy collection that showcased unconventional ideas. The show opened with a Cirque De Soleil vignette featuring five performers who played and toyed with the audience and each other. Stand out pieces include pants with faux lace up boot detail on the legs, a gray knee length skirt that opens on one side up to the thigh with snaps, motorcycle jackets with cropped sleeves and matching long gloves, high waist leather pencil skirts and a men’s utilitarian jacket anchored with an obi belt. Future Heretics was both a good contrast and compliment to Gypsy 05’s bohemian offerings.

When both brands are viewed together, there is a nomadic quality that lies at the core of each respective line. Gypsy 05’s line suggests a time of fun, light heartedness and a laid-back demeanor while the Future Heretics line expresses a more somber and serious attitude. What separates these brands is the tribe of people they outfit, the fun loving gypsies and the pensive heretics.

Playing Dress Up
3 | 20 | 2011 by Edgar Carranza

andF_DressUp

One of the best pieces of advice I could ever give a man interested in keeping in style, would be to pick a fashion icon. Finding someone whose style you admire goes a long way in helping to find your own voice as a fashionista. A lot of the time, TV characters are a great place to look for inspiration because though they seem like they might just wake up and get out of bed looking runway ready. The reality is every single detail from the fit of a pair of jeans to the way certain colors will show on camera, have all been carefully considered by a costume department. Most people could grab a pair of pants and a shirt to make a decent outfit, but if you want to look, “Legen(wait for it…)dary” you might want to pay attention to the amazing work that costume designer Julie Bennett Block has been doing in dressing one of TV’s most stylish men; the one and only, Barney Stinson. The legendary ladies’ man portrayed by the always charming Neil Patrick Harris on the hit sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. Barney Stinson’s full throttle charm alone is not enough to quench his indomitable womanizing ways. No, Barney needs the extra edge provided by his battle armor of choice- the two button suit. Block’s choice of a two button suit is no accident. The two button suit cuts a clean silhouette for men of slender frames and helps give a bit of height, as well as gives the dress shirt and tie a little more space to shine. The suits seen on the show include a list of the best designers around; Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Paul Smith and Burberry are among the many suits that have been worn by Stinson. Fans of the show may have noted Stinson’s penchant for a great skinny tie. Skinny ties portray a great modern look that helps bring a youthful appeal to any suit. Always be careful not to go too skinny since you will still want to create some contrast between your shirt and tie for a greater overall look.

Neil Patrick Harris’ hilarious and lovable ladies’ man would not be the same without the great work of Block and her team. So do yourself a favor and keep an eye on the costume design next time you are watching your favorite show and maybe you will find that look you are looking for.
